It is with a deep sense of gratitude that I send the following testimony, coupled with the hope that it may help others who are struggling to free themselves from the fetters of sickness and sin. It is some six years ago that I first entered a Christian Science church, not daring to hope for healing, but thinking possibly that Christian Science might bring me a little peace of mind, a thing I had not known for years. I was suffering from an illness contracted over twenty years ago and for which materia medica admits that it can offer no remedy. This illness was accompanied by a badly ulcerated tongue, from which I often suffered a great deal of pain and discomfort, together with other symptoms which it is unnecessary to describe in detail.
I had been under the care of many doctors, including one of the best specialists in London, and had gone through the various treatments prescribed without getting any real benefit. When I found that they practically admitted their inability even to afford me any relief, I gave up medicine and practised various systems of hygiene, exercises, etc. Then, in desperation, I tried what was known as a "starvation cure." For two years I lived on one meal a day and during that time made several very long fasts, on one occasion abstaining from food entirely for thirty days. This drastic treatment seemed to bring me some relief, but it was only of a temporary nature, and when I recommenced to take nourishment all the old symptoms returned.
It was about this time that, although I was in no sense what one would call a religious man, I began to pray for help—to a God who seemed only an enigma. I could never understand why such a dreadful punishment should be meted out to me, a punishment that no human father would inflict on the most disobedient child. And then, as if in answer to my prayer, Christian Science was first brought to my notice. I went alone to a Wednesday evening meeting and heard several testimonies of healing given by people of an intelligence and education that commanded respect. After the service I obtained an introduction to a practitioner and decided to take treatment.
