Twelve years ago, I read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"...

Twelve years ago, I read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I read it through with criticism, and made notes and citations, and I frankly confess that I rejected its teaching then, without understanding it. Myself and family remained with the adherents of materia medica another six years, when a case of croup brought the doctor to our home at two o'clock in the morning, and she remained with us for seven hours, giving medicine every fifteen or twenty minutes. For several days the cough, medicine, caution, and fear held us in bondage; in fact, the remainder of the winter was passed in fear and trembling.

During the summer we found it necessary to consult a Christian Science practitioner for our penury and woe. We began to read and study, in accordance with the instructions of our guide, and as much as possible to "fear no evil." The following winter (now five years ago), the same child awakened us one night with symptoms precisely the same as those of the year before. We telephoned to the Christian Science practitioner and stated the conditions to her. She replied: "All right. Do not have any fear for the child, and I will go to work." These words are as music to us every time the experience is recalled. We obeyed her instructions, and in the morning we found that both the croup and our fears were gone. From that time to the present Christian Science has been our stay alway.

Recently, through carelessness in using wood alcohol in a gasoline stove, there was an explosion which threw the flaming fluid upon my face, and before the blaze was out I had rubbed off several pieces of skin. I called my wife from another room, and we began our work in calmness as we continued the preparation of the breakfast. I sat down and ate as usual, got on my bicycle and rode about two miles, and was at my bench work in a machine shop on time. At the end of twelve hours the first outward attention was given my face by cleaning it with a cloth and enough vaseline to remove the dirt. After this, soap and water was the only cleanser. The second day my face was swollen so that I was troubled about seeing my work, but by the third day the swelling was nearly gone and the burned surface was covered. The fourth and fifth days were "mending days," and on the sixth day the incrustations were fully half gone. The following day conditions were so nearly normal that I felt perfectly at ease in the mid-week meeting, where I found myself with a heart overflowing with love and admiration for her who had blazed the path which I now try to follow, but which was rejected twelve years ago simply because I knew not the language of the guide-pose where she had shown the way to Truth as revealed in the Master's teaching.
