I wish to tell what Christian Science has done for me....
I wish to tell what Christian Science has done for me. After I suffered for years from biliousness, rheumatism, and malaria, I was advised by an old friend to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I purchased the book, and during six years read parts of it, but never entirely through. I did not go to church as I ought to have done; but, although I understood very little of Christian Science, I found that I had no further use for medicine, though before this I had been a constant user of drugs.
I followed the livery business from the time I was eighteen years of age, was thrown into the company of drinking men continually, and in consequence indulged the drinking habit myself until I became a wreck; but after reading Science and Health I decided to try Christian Science for intemperance. I was then fifty years of age, and had not eaten a breakfast for more than a year. I saw a practitioner and took treatment, and next morning I ate a good breakfast. I did not drink any more for two days, then commenced again and kept it up for some time. I went back to the practitioner and asked her if she would try me again, and she said that she would, if I would read Science and Health and go to church. I promised to do so, and from that time on I have not had any appetite for drink, and this happened three and a half years ago.
While I was healed of the drink habit in one treatment, I was treated for a few weeks longer in consequence of physical complications. I attend the Wednesday meetings, and have learned much from them; I do not lose my temper and swear as I did, and I have learned to think better of my fellow men. In every way I am a healthier and a better man, and I am thankful to God, and to Mrs. Eddy for even the slight knowledge that I have of Christian Science.—Charles H. Hopper, Fresno, Cal.
