[Written for the Sentinel.]

THE PURPOSE

Take all thy hidden talents. Do not miss
The purposes of Life, and never wait
For coming days to overthrow thy fate.
In thine own grasp sleeps destiny. Let this
Vast truth bar out all doubt, all prejudice.
Do not procrastinate. Know thou art great—
Great with nobility; and dominate
All thy surroundings; ent'ring into bliss.

Oh, love much, hating none, keeping no aim
That does not 'cord with the eternal good!
Hear what the echoes of the silence say:
All hope is thine if thou wilt voice thy claim;
Allow the Spirit to be understood—
All lesser things must vanish, pass away.
