From the love of liberty and, from what is rarer, the ability of organizing liberty in institutions, sprang the America of which we are so fondly proud. Our popular or democratic idea is associated with the religious instinct, so that our political has always rested upon our religious liberty. Democracy is the declaration of a brotherhood of rights, and therefore, with a sublime propriety, forecasting its destined liberty, the first articulate words of America were, "All men are born free and equal,"—the echo in the mouths of legislators and the hearts of a people of the song the Syrian shepherds heard from celestial singers, "On earth peace, good will toward men."—George William Curtis.
