A few months after my arrival in America, fourteen years...

A few months after my arrival in America, fourteen years ago, I was obliged to undergo a severe operation and remain for six months in a hospital, where every means was used to lift me out of my distressed condition. I gradually lost all faith in medicine, but particularly after this incident occurred to me. My pain was so great that the doctor deemed it necessary to give me a hypodermic injection, with the result of a night of peaceful sleep. The next night I asked for the dose to be repeated, then entreated the nurse, and at last demanded help, so the doctor at length acquiesced. In the morning when I awoke every one smiled as I told them of my beautiful sleep, and still laughing the nurse told me the injection was simply a drop of water. Disappointed in the help, I turned to God for assistance, as I knew there must be a greater power to help and deliver me. I had not yet heard of Christian Science, but during my stay in the hospital I refused all medicine and told the doctor that God alone could help me.

A year after leaving the hospital I heard of Christian Science through a neighbor. For one week I was treated, and studied the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I was healed of many ills, not only physically, but I obtained a great spiritual quickening and regeneration. My final demonstration was made some months ago, over an old ailment. The doctors had said that as long as I lived I should require a truss, and after gaining some knowledge of Christian Science I had tried many times to discard it, but it seemed as if I could not free myself from the mortal law which had been laid upon me by the physicians. A neighbor called on me to help their son, who was under a very serious illness. I was at first afraid to take the case and tried to induce them to have a practitioner, but they would have no one but me and I then realized that God had given me that work to do. I took it up with the greatest faithfulness, and in a few treatments he was healed. My gratitude and joy were unbounded, at being made an instrument for divine Love. While dressing one morning, the thought came to me as to why I still used the truss. I saw that it had no power, and asked myself why I should not apply the same law in my own case as I had applied to my neighbor's son. I then laid the truss aside, and the realization of the truth I preached to others healed me. I am perfectly well, and am so glad to express my thankfulness to God for this wonderful truth; also to Mrs. Eddy, through whose teaching we have received so much help and have been taught that God delivers us from all evil.
