TRUE SOCIALISM
Because the brotherhood of man, as a correlative of God's fatherhood, is eternally and fundamentally true, the human mind for centuries has been spiritually aspiring toward a final demonstration of this grand fact. In an orderly process of unfoldment we find first the family life, then the hamlet, the town, the city, the state, the country, Hand in hand with these manifestations, however, are "wars and rumors of wars:" pride, ambition, conquest, oppression, tyranny, subjugation,—the reign of might and not of right.
Human history is a record of these struggles. Today a broader and wider philanthropy has reached a philosophic and even Christian socialism, in theory, at least, evincing splendid energy, noble and self-sacrificing toil, as Maurice, George, Kingsley, Fourier, have shown in striving for the betterment and uplifting of the poorer classes and added comfort for the working people. This leaven of loving ardor for Christ's kingdom must be the earth helping the woman, preparing consciousness for the grand hour when dawning truth will blaze the true way of attainment. In these human efforts good and evil still seem to be sadly mixed, as must ever be the case until the true basis is found, for side by side with the noble efforts of Christian socialism, red-handed anarchy, breathing hate and murder, lifts its hand of Cain to slay the brother. Christian Science, the divine interpreter, as Mrs. Eddy tells us, "with which can be discerned the spiritual fact of whatever the material senses behold" (Science and Health, p. 585), uncovers the error, reveals the divine way, and points to the ultimate attainment or demonstration of what is and ever was true.
When Mrs. Eddy, in her original and revolutionary way, declared the unreality and impersonality of evil, she gave a fatal blow to all evil in saying that it is "neither person, place, nor thing" (Ibid., p. 71). For ages men have labored in vain to destroy evil on the basis of its reality, but when one learns in Christian Science to separate the evil illusion from the individual, and begins to prove its unreality, as "neither person, place, nor thing," since God is All-in-all, the only Mind, cause, creator of man and the universe, he lays the axe at the very root of all sin, discord, disease, death. As this truth is proven in our life-work, and the real, ideal man is seen to be entirely separate and apart from the seeming evil, and altogether lovely and lovable, the work of demonstrating the brotherhood of man is already begun on its true basis, and it is going on in Christian Science daily, hourly.
