When I first became interested in Christian Science, a...
When I first became interested in Christian Science, a little over a year ago, I remember how eagerly I perused the Sentinel and Journal for testimonies of healing of cases similar to my own, and when my search was rewarded, how it strengthened the hope that I might be healed and gave me greater encouragement to accept and prove Christian Science. In the hope that my testimony may reach some one in similar frame of mind, I am glad to present these facts.
When a boy, I was attacked with what I thought was hereditary stomach trouble, which began in a mild form, and grew worse year by year, until about seven years ago, when my physicians pronounced it catarrhal affection of the stomach. I suffered intensely night and day for weeks together, during which time I was unable to retain any kind of food. I tried a great many kinds of medicines, when gave temporary relief only. Then I took regular courses of treatment with some of the best physicians and specialists in Kentucky and Ohio. Under one form of treatment I was required to lie in bed for six weeks and live on an exclusive milk diet. Finally I was treated by a noted New York specialist, under whose dietary rules I lived for nineteen months on uncooked foods. While this seemed to afford me great benefit. I was not cured, and I would suffer serious relapses from time to time. The last doctor I consulted was frank in saying that he could not help me. Twenty-three years had now elapsed since I began to take medicine, and I had almost lost confidence in it or the profession thereof, and was growing extremely despondent.
When my attention was first directed to Christian Science, some years ago, by a friend in the far West who was anxious for me to become interested in it as a means of regaining my fast-waning health, I was evidently not prepared to accept it, as I gave the subject but a fleeting thought and dismissed it as too ridiculous to admit of sane consideration. However, a little over a year ago, Christian Science was again recommended to me by a friend in Chicago, who presented it so earnestly that I determined to look into the subject. A few days later I met by chance a gentleman from St. Louis, who told me of his wonderful cure through Christian Science of serious lung trouble, and advised that I attend the meetings, and a lecture on Christian Science which was to be held the following Sunday. I did so, and it was all so different from what I had imagined; the beautiful service and the impressions convinced me that I had at last found a source of relief from the bondage of sickness and mental depression. I purchased a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" and began to read, and a little later asked for help from a practitioner. In a very few days I noticed that my appetite was returning, and I began to eat and enjoy my food as I had not done in years. I continued to improve daily, and in a week was eating anything I desired, without the fear as of old, and the consequent suffering. I have gained in weight, and at this writing my trouble has entirely disappeared. For this beautiful demonstration of the efficacy of divine healing. I am exceedingly thankful to God, and grateful to Mrs. Eddy, through whom the Science of Life and being has been revealed, as taught and practised in Christian Science.—Edward J. Wilson, Cincinnati.
