Portland (Ore.) Journal

In a recent issue of the Journal I read a report of a paper given to the Ministers' association by Dr.—, in which he evidently misinterprets the teachings of Mrs. Eddy and Christian Science. I am not a Christian Scientist, but belong to an orthodox church, as they are called, but I believe in all fairness the doctor should allow Christian Scientists to explain their tenets, as they do in all their meetings and publications. The willing ear given his paper will neither help nor hinder the truth.

What little I have read of Christian Science has greatly helped me in religious life, and particularly the teachings in regard to prayer, to which the doctor takes so much exception. Fruits are the best evidence of proper teaching, and the contrast between the large congregations of the Science churches and the empty pews to which the doctor has been preaching for the past few months is a sufficient proof.
