Soon after I became interested in Christian Science I...
Soon after I became interested in Christian Science I went to Bethlehem, N. H., for the summer, and one day took the trip up Mt. Washington. We all know that to reach any great height, whatever the means, the journey must be slow, but what a view we had on reaching the summit! Suddenly in the clear blue sky there appeared a cloud, then others quickly gathered. In a remarkably short time, while neighboring peaks on one side seemed laughing in the sunshine, those on one side seemed laughing in the shadow. Then both were lost to view, enveloped in a heavy mist, and we were glad to seek shelter from the pelting hailstones. As the storm abated we ventured out, clinging cautiously to the rocks and watching with intense interest the sun and the wind battling with the clouds. Finally there came a tiny rift in the clouds, and through this small vista we caught a glimpse of a far-off landscape, lying warm and bright in the glorious sunshine, as if it were indeed the "promised land."
Making immediate application of this instance to my experience in Christian Science, I realized that although I seemed to be away "up in the clouds" in the feeling of exhilaration that had come to me in the joy of the newfound truth, I must begin at the bottom and climb. Though sometimes the way seems dark and gloomy, while I stumble and perhaps fall over the rough places, as I occasionally reach the open I know by the extended view that I have attained higher ground. Then on and on again, leaving old landmarks behind, I pursue the upward path. Before coming to Christian Science I had found teaching a rather trying task physically, but that sense soon became one of the old landmarks, and instead I find that God gives me daily strength, as much for the last day of the school term as the first. Truth and Love have helped me to fight many battles, and I know now that I have reached a height where the view of life is wider, grander, more beautiful and hopeful than was ever possible before.
