[Written for the Sentinel.]

WITHIN THY HOUSE

Within thy house, O blessed pilgrim stranger,
Watch well lest error creep in unaware!
Hold dear its sanctity,
Inviolate let it be
From rude intrusion and earth's stagnant air!

Insistent voices from without are calling,
The sense—world claims admittance as its due;
Now fain would enter in
Clamors of fear and sin,
Sorrow and pain and all a heart's full rue!

The false beliefs that ages have but sanctioned,
Into the chambers of thy growing thought
Glide stealthily and still,
Nor pride nor human will
Can stay their coming nor the havoc wrought!

God's man should dwell in airs serene and quiet,
The sweet security of Love to know;
The flowers of His care
should bud and blossom there,
And all their fragrance on His own bestow!

He builded well; guard thou thy habitation
And glorify it for thy Lord to see!
Each secret place keep bright
In His pervading light,
And shape thy dwelling for eternity!
