"TEACH US TO PRAY"

The beginner in Christian Science often asks, "But how am I to pray? I feel as if I could not pray!" The eleventh chapter of Luke's Gospel has helped me very much on this subject, The disciples' entreaty, "Lord, teach us to pray," receives a practical and detailed answer from Jesus, who clearly teaches them how to pray, showing that perseverance and unfaltering trust should be ours; that we should stand firm, nothing doubting, even though results may not be immediately forthcoming; and, as St. Paul says, "having done all, to stand."

Illumination came to me as I read the Master's reassuring words, "How much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him. " Our heavenly Father, Spirit, Mind, gives of the things of Spirit; therefore we must ever pray for the best gifts,—for that understanding which is "a well-spring of life unto him that hath it;" for the real substance, "that which is eternal and incapable of discord and decay" (Science and Health, p. 468), for the Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus;" and thus be added unto us,

Our key to life eternal, the Christian Science text-book, clearly expresses on page 4 the means of gaining real substance: "What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness, love, and good deeds."
