Christian Science does not teach that "there are no human ills." It teaches, on the contrary, that sin, disease, and death are experiences of human, mortal existence, and while they are very real to this mistaken sense of being comprised in human consciousness, unenlightened by spiritual sense and ignorant of the truth of being as taught in Christian Science, wherein man is conceived to be the image and likeness of God, Spirit, who made everything that was made, and without whom was nothing made that was made; and who saw everything that He had made and pronounced it "very good," they are found to be nothing but illusions when this true sense of being is attained. With this true understanding of God and His creation, more or less clearly discerned, the Christian Science is daily demonstrating his position by the destruction of "human ills" more surely and with a greater degree of success than the advocates of any other system of therapeutics yet promulgated....

There is no authority in the Scriptures for combining medicine and God for the relief of the sick and suffering. Christ Jesus was the most successful in overcoming them. and he never consulted a physician or used medicine. When his disciples asked him why they had not been able to heal a certain case, he said: "Because of your unbelief;" adding, "Howbeit this kind goeth not out but prayer and fasting. "He said to his disciples that they should do the works that he did, and even greater than he had done; he instructed them to go into all the world and preach the gospel and heal the sick, adding, "These signs shall follow them that believe;... they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."
