JEWELS

Translucency would seem to be the type of heavenly imagery in Holy Writ. In Revelation St. John gives us a description of "the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal; ... and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass." Then follows a description of her foundations of precious stones. It is not the purpose here to enter on a discussion of the spiritual significance of the gold and precious stones of the heavenly Jerusalem, but rather to tell of a lesson learned from precious stones by the writer, which may be as helpful to others as it was to him. God, through the mouth of His prophet Malachi, calls His children His "jewels." "And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels."

A case which had been healed was one of malignant growth with internal complications, and the practitioner found it necessary for the patient to understand that man is not under the influence of the wrong thoughts of others. This was not at first understood. "Why," said she, "If the thought that is good can reach me, and work to the elimination of that which is evil and discordant, cannot the wrong thought of others work in a contrary manner, to the destruction of good?" The practitioner replied that there is but one Mind, one real thinker, the thinker of good. The patient, who sat facing the light, was wearing a diamond brooch in the form of a "true love-knot." The sun shone on it, and the many stones reflected beautiful rainbow hues. Each jewel reflected the light, and transmitted the rays of its borrowed beauty to the other stones. The sun was the source of it all. No shadow could possibly be cast by the jewels, by reason of their pure translucency. Each ray was distinct, individual, perfect, and though flashed by one diamond to another in countless rays of light and splendor, still the sun was the source of it all.

Darkness has no ray to transmit; it is but rayless vacuity, nothing, a belief in the absence of the something called light. As our Leader says, "In Science there is no transfer of evil suggestions from one mortal to another, for there is but one Mind, and this ever-present, omnipotent Mind is reflected by man and governs the entire universe" (Science and Health, p. 496). And this is the "true love-knot." "What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder."
