GRATITUDE

While studying a recent Lesson-Sermon I was much struck with the prayer used by Jesus in the raising of Lazarus; when he said, "Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. And I knew that thou hearest me always." We must have both gratitude and faith before we receive the blessing; we must know we have it, that it is already ours. Jesus said, "Therefore I say unto you, what things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them." Says our Leader, "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love" (Science and Health, p. 1). When the stone was taken away from the place where Lazarus was laid, Jesus did not wait to see Lazarus step forth; he knew his prayer had been heard, he believed that he had received an answer and he gave thanks. In the glossary (Ibid., p. 595), one of the spiritual definitions of the word "tithe" is given as "gratitude." Before we receive the blessings we have to bring in our tithes—gratitude, faith, and prayer. Christian Science illumines the Scriptures, and the Lesson-Sermons are daily unfolding to us more of eternal Truth.
