In order to point out the position of Christian Science...
Morning Star
In order to point out the position of Christian Science with reference to the treatment of disease, I would like by way of introduction to ask this question: "Does matter or Mind do the thinking?" In other words, are we dependent for the thinking?" In other words, are we dependent for the consciousness of life, health, activity, volition, capacity, etc., upon a mortal, finite, human mind, supposed to exist in matter, or upon the one infinite, immortal, divine intelligence or Mind which is the source and cause of all that really exists? I suppose that practically all will agree that the brain, which is said to be the seat of our intelligence, is composed of plain every-day water and other non-intelligent stuff. Why, then, is the brain supposed to be capable of originating thought and action while the same amount of the same kind of matter outside of the head cannot originate anything? Does it not seem reasonable that the difference is due to a supposed law of human mind existing outside and independent of matter? Dr. William Hanna Thompson suggests this influence when he says, "The personality is as different from the brain as the violinist is from his violin." Now let us suppose that this so-called human or mortal mind controls the human or mortal body just as the violinist controls his violin. Then suppose that this human or mortal mind is full of fear, worry, hatred, anger, greed, lust, belief in the necessity and inevitability of disease and death. Does it not seem reasonable, if we admit these premises, to conclude that the human or mortal mind can and does make the human or mortal body sick and even kill it?
That which has caused evil cannot cure it. What then is the true antidote for the discord, disease, and death supposed to be caused by the so-called human or mortal mind? What could be the true antidote or cure but the Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus"—the divine Mind, the Mind which is the one supreme, omnipotent, omnipresent, all-inclusive intelligence, Life, Truth, Love, which made, governs, and preserves the real man and the real universe? This right idea, or spiritual idea of Mind or God, is the eternal Christ which, when it appears in consciousness, destroys all that is evil—all that is based upon a mistaken or ignorant sense of God. When this right idea of God and man in His likeness—the likeness of divine Mind or Spirit—comes into consciousness as gently as the light shines into a darkened room, and begins to correct and destroy all that means suffering and distress, it cannot be said that the one in whom this change is effected has been hypnotized, mesmerized, or "mentally suggested" out of his disease.
