I had been healed of mental trouble, and numerous...
I had been healed of mental trouble, and numerous physical ailments had disappeared at the same time, still I found myself wondering if I could trust myself fully to Christian Science in times of intense suffering. The day finally came for me to decide which master I should serve. I had been subject to severe attacks of stomach trouble. and one morning I awoke in excruciating pain, but I started for my office. I was well acquainted with these attacks and knew I should have to call for help, but whether to go to a doctor as usual, where I was pretty sure to find temporary relief, or to try Christian Science, that was the question. I struggled through the day, unable to make up my mind which to do. At four o'clock I realized I could put it off no longer. The pain was becoming unbearable, and it took courage to decide that I would not go to the doctor, but would try Christian Science. I said, "If Christian Science can stop this pain, it will surely be a proof to me of its healing power. I will give it an honest trial."
With difficulty, for I could not stand erect, I boarded a car and reached the office of a practitioner. After treating me, the practitioner said encouragingly that I would soon be better. I looked at him in amazement. I thought he did not know that these attacks lasted several days. He furthermore told me I could fill a social engagement for that evening which I had given up all hope of keeping, also that I might eat a good dinner. This all seemed most incongruous to me, but I had resolved to do my part, come what might. I did as I was told to do, and to my astonishment the pain left me during dinner. I was able to participate in the evening's gaiety without pain or weakness. It had always taken several days for me to regain my strength after these attacks, and my mother's surprise at my healing was profound, for she had been anticipating the customary siege, and to see me well and strong inside of a few hours seemed very wonderful to her.
The healing was permanent, there having been no return of the trouble in the three years that have followed. My master proved well chosen. I have not taken a drop of medicine since that time. Christian Science has been my healer. I am, however, still more grateful for the spiritual growth which has followed the study of our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," than for the physical healing, and the constant effort to bring the truths I have learned into my daily living has done wonders for me. Had not our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, reopened the way Christ Jesus showed his followers, and shared her joy unselfishly with all the world, we, the thousands who are rejoicing in the healing power of Christian Science, would still be in bondage. Is it to be wondered at that our hearts go out to her in love and gratitude unspeakable. Some day I hope to live so as to express fully my thankfulness.—Bertha D. Weston, Boston, Mass.
