We feel it a duty to express our gratitude for the blessing...

We feel it a duty to express our gratitude for the blessing which Christian Science has brought to us. Our nine-months-old baby was, almost from the time of his birth, a sufferer from stomach and bowel trouble. It seemed impossible for him to retain any nourishment without intense suffering. We did everything that was possible in materia medica, having had four different physicians, but the child continued to grow worse. The doctors told us that his condition could be remedied only by the "starvation method," so we put the little one on a diet of barley water, feeding him nothing else. He became a mere skeleton, but even this diet did not relieve his suffering, and his agony many times seemed unbearable. At last he became so ill that we were told the trouble had gone to his brain and spine. Our last attending physician called in a specialist, and after a lengthy consultation they gave us no encouragement. The child remained in this condition for several days, screaming most of the time, until exhausted. Following this, he went into a sleep which lasted for sixteen hours. The doctor advised us to awaken him, but we found it impossible to do so; in fact, the doctor said it was probable that he would sleep until the end came.

We had heard a great deal about Christian Science, but not until the case seemed so entirely hopeless would we call a practitioner, as we dreaded giving up the medicines on which the baby's life seemed to depend. As a last effort we called in a practitioner, and much to our surprise, she had been there only a short while when the child's breathing became regular, and in a few hours he waked up and looked brighter than he had been for weeks. He showed absolutely no sign of suffering. The next morning the practitioner told us to feed him milk, if we cared to, and much to our surprise it did not hurt him in the least. The child has never shown the least sign of a recurrence of the trouble. He takes his milk regularly, eats heartily of food at meal time, without any bad results, and is now a fat and healthy boy. We are indeed grateful to God for this blessing brought us through Christian Science.
