It is nearly two years since it was proved to me in Christian Science that "there is no power apart from God" (Science and Health, p. 228), and I feel that no one has any more to be thankful for than have I. I was healed of severe pain in the head, which had been growing worse day by day for more than a year. Materia medica would relieve the pain for a short time, but as each day it returned and was rapidly growing worse, I began to fear that I would lose my reason. My family was very much worried about me. One evening my daughter came from the home of a Christian Scientist and told me that a friend had said I could be cured if I would read Science and Health. I had very little faith in this, but like many others I was willing to try anything. I commenced reading that evening. The next day and each succeeding day the pain grew less, until in a very few days it was gone entirely, never to return. Then I said, "If Christian Science can cure one disease, it can cure all."
When a small child I fell and dislocated one of my hips, which was never replaced. I could not bring my feet together without turning my whole body. For twenty-five years I had suffered with rheumatic trouble in the other hip, and it gradually grew worse, so that I was never free from pain, night or day. In time this joint too became stiff, and at last I was compelled to use a cane, which I continued to do for eight years, and I also suffered excruciating pain if I was on my feet for any length of time. I had the best of physicians, and tried all kinds of remedies,—electricity, osteopathy, etc.,—until I finally gave up all hope of ever being any better, and when asked about the rheumatic trouble, my answer was invariably, "Getting worse; it has come to stay." After my head was cured I continued to read Science and Health, and also to attend church. One Wednesday evening I said, "I am going to leave my cane at home and lean on God to-night;" and I have never used the cane since (that was in April, 1906). I never have any more pain, can walk for hours without any bad effects, never get tired. The dislocated joint is free. I can move it without any trouble, and although one limb is still shorter than the other, I know that I shall be entirely healed and walk as straight as any one. I am learning what it means to "work out your own salvation." and with God's help I cannot fail.
Not long ago, when alone one night in my room at a hotel, without a friend near me, I was healed of a very severe attack of illness which lasted an hour and a half, just by holding fast to the truth and trusting to God to set me free. The next morning, although a little weak, I was well and able to go to my daughter, several blocks away, without any assistance. I have had many more demonstrations, for which I thank God; and I am also grateful to our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for showing us how we may rely on divine Love in all our needs.
