I am very grateful for all that Christian Science has...
I am very grateful for all that Christian Science has done for me. It has brought many blessings, and made life not only worth living, but brighter and happier than I ever thought it could be. I daily bless and praise our Father-Mother, divine Love, that to this generation has come the Comforter which Christ Jesus promised should lead us into all truth, and I rejoice greatly at the steady growth of Christian Science in Scotland. Truth is indeed "the desired of all nations." as all know who have felt its healing and saving power. I first heard of Christian Science by what seemed at the time to be the merest chance, though I now see in it the loving guidance of God. When Queen Victoria died, my sister and I went to London, four hundred miles away, to see the funeral. We went to see evidences of death, but found Life, for we heard of Christian Science. I did not then in the least understand it, but always afterwards, in reading the Gospels in school to my pupils, the thought would come, "I do not understand how these beautiful miracles were done, but these people (the Scientists) think they can explain them. Oh, if it were true!" Now I see that this reaching out towards Truth was prayer, and the answer came when a copy of Science and Health was put into my hands. This was the turning-point of my life, which it simply transformed, turning and overturning material beliefs and old theological doctrines and making all things new. From being despondent and pessimistic, with a strong belief in injustice and the power of evil, thought was uplifted to see the spiritual law alone governing man, the divine law of Love and Truth.
What a change the new outlook on life has wrought! The light heart which the understanding of the unity of good brings with it enables me to do my day's work in the schoolroom twice as cheerfully and much more efficiently than before. It gives the "firmament" of understanding to separate the real from the unreal, recognizing the good alone as the real, thus bringing out better results in conduct and scholarship among the pupils. It has taught me how to love these young people better, and help them to rise above all sorts of limitations; especially to recognize and destroy, as no part of the real child of God, the temptations to say, "I can't,"—which is fear,—and "I don't care," —which is indifference and apathy. The teaching of Christian Science that there is one Mind, is a constant help, and has enabled me to see, again and again, how stupidity and carelessness may give place to intelligent effort and good will. Also it promotes a delightful sense of harmony, sympathy, and mental alertness, the proper atmosphere for the achievement of good results.
Instead of coming home tired and worn out, requiring rest and recreation, through Christian Science all my sense of fatigue has been removed, and I am kept in excellent health. I formerly suffered every winter from throat trouble, but now it hardly ever appears, and if it does, it is quickly destroyed by Truth. The teaching of Christian Science regarding accidents is so effective that when knocked down by a bicycle which was going full speed, I suffered no pain at all and had little sense of shock. I am very grateful for being delivered from the bondage of fear and irresolution. Principle is seen to be a safe and sure guide, not only enabling me to be better and do better, but also to help and encourage others. I am also most grateful for the enlarged sense of the meaning of the Church, and highly appreciate the privilege of belonging to The Mother Church with its world-wide influence,—elevating the race, uniting all nations, and bringing to light the kingdom of God within.
