Bishop Auckland Times, County Durham, EnglandA correction was made in the 1908 Sentinel: "The article on page 807 in the issue of June 13 should have been credited to the Bishop Auckland Times, County Durham, England, instead of the Auckland Times and Herald, New Zealand.—EDITOR.
"Jesus bore our infirmities; he knew the error of mortal belief, and 'with his stripes [the rejection of error] we are healed' " (Science and Health, p. 20). This statement from the Christian Science text-book answers the question, What is healing? and when understood it can be demonstrated. Mortals instinctively resist disease and death—although not always willing to resist sin—and try in every known way to overcome them. The point is: Are we resisting error, sin, disease, and death the way the Bible teaches? Are we rejecting them through the belief that mind is in matter and that matter heals, or through the understanding that Mind—Spirit—is the only intelligence and power, and that God heals? One of these methods must be true. Both cannot be. Surely all want to know the right one, even though it necessitate a change of belief....
Through Christian Science we find that there is something more to heal than a sick body—that there are evil dispositions and tendencies, such as fear, envy, jealousy, malice, lust, and hate, which affect the body and must be overcome before health and holiness can be gained. There are many kinds of wrong mental conditions, social and civil, that have never been considered capable of cure. Christian Science proclaims that all evil conditions will be destroyed by righteousness—right thinking. Every man, woman, and child can heal the sick when taught the truth contained in the Christian Science text-book, Science and Health. To be a Christian is to be a doer of the works of Christ, to be able to heal the sick as well as the sinful.... Christian Science is not a doctoring business,—competing with doctors,—but a religion teaching the Science of Life, which, when understood, is attended with signs following. "Through his stripes we are healed." Who is willing to reject evil thoughts every moment of the day? Who is willing to give up all for Christ? Such an one can heal himself and others successfully, as is being proved in the ranks of Christian Science every day.
If all the Christian churches would make the healing "works" the basis of their religion, they could unite in doctrine at once. All differences of opinion would cease, and all would be brethren. There would be no more strife; no more discord, at least among the churches. We shall all be "one body" when these commands of the Master are understood and obeyed: "As ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils."
