The "wisdom from above" which has come to Mrs. Eddy...

Church of Ireland Gazette

The "wisdom from above" which has come to Mrs. Eddy through patient search in the Scriptures, faithfulness, and unwearied devotion, is far above the "wisdom of this world," which has not advanced far enough in six thousand years to tell us truly what man is; even what his body is; nor taught us how to get rid of our common ailments with scientific certainty. Human remedies stand for a series of experiments; the medicine which relieves one man's headache has no effect upon another, and even when successful, often loses its effect after a time. The Bible has always pointed to God as the great Healer, and in all ages there have been men who understood this enough to be able to demonstrate it for themselves and others. This scientific knowledge was hidden for so long that when it was rediscovered by a woman, through her pure and exalted understanding, it seemed incredible to the world. But in the last forty years untold thousands of miserable, tired, suffering mortals have learned from her the secret of relief from their mental and physical burdens, and their experience has found no flaw in her logic. The critic confirms the statement that there are undoubted cures in Christian Science practice, but he has not yet, perhaps, had opportunities of seeing how it purifies and uplifts, so that to a Christian Scientist dirt, disorder, and lawlessness become abhorrent, and culture, purity, progress, and true beauty his delight.

The Bible asserts sin and disease to be so closely connected that our Master gave his command to the paralytic man to "arise, and walk," as a proof that his sins had been forgiven. May we not equally believe that the burden of some sin has been lifted when we hear the testimony of one who has been healed through the same power? St. Paul says that "the carnal mind is enmity against God." May not some thought of this mind have been detected and cast out, and the sufferer started on the upward path which leads to everlasting life, when he can say, "I am healed!"
