Christian Science has been of such incalculable benefit...
Christian Science has been of such incalculable benefit to me that it is a pleasure to tell what it has done. Unlike the greater number of its followers, I did not require physical healing. I was an agnostic, never had read and did not possess a Bible, and to go to church seemed so hypocritical that I never even thought of it. This attitude may seem strange, but I had been brought up among people who might be called thoughtless agnostics. Not knowing, we gave no thought whatever to religion. I was hampered at this time by discontent, unhappiness, and a sense of material limitation, with a tendency toward despondency. Finally, a friend, whom I loved very dearly, fell into a serious moral error, which caused me much unhappiness, and I saw that this person needed only strength of character to overcome the trouble. It occurred to both of us, at this time, that Christian Science might supply the needed stamina, and I decided to learn something of it.
Unfortunately, the first persons to whom I mentioned my intention were believers in so-called "mental science," and they persuaded me that I would find in it just what I was seeking. I immediately took steps to investigate one of the many sects which have followed in the wake of Christian Science; and after some years, the only result I had was the knowledge that the study to which I had given so much time meant nothing more than resignation to existing conditions. A prominent member to whom I finally penetrated, could offer nothing but something platitudes when the time came that active results were needed. I retired baffled and discouraged, and then came the thought that I would return to my first desire and study Christian Science.
This I did shortly, and with what different results! I was given an infallible Principle, by the understanding of which I might work out all discord from myself and my surroundings. There was as much real active work for me to do as I had the time for, and work which brought actual results. These results have been effected in the overcoming of serious ailments from which my little son was suffering; the overcoming of heart, stomach, and kidney trouble, etc. All these cures, and more, have been effected in my own immediate circle. In addition to this, I have been able to overcome a tendency toward despondency and resentment, having formerly actually prided myself on the fact that I never forgot an injury.
