Baltimore (Md.) World

The position of The World on Christian Science was stated over two years ago. and is the same to-day, viz.: Unless it can be shown that the general influence of Christian Science is that of degradation and evil, it is worse than folly to attack it. The fact that this individual or that individual can or cannot believe in Christian Science makes no difference to a newspaper which lays any claim to being loyal to the unspoken oath of office. From our standpoint the only question involved is whether the influence of the thing as a whole is for the betterment, the encouragement, the uplifting of the citizens of Baltimore, we might say of the human race as an entirety; but in so far as no daily paper reaches that entire race, each paper must look to the interests of its home. There has never been a word of reliable testimony to show that the influence of Christian Science is not one of purity, buoyancy, aggressive action, the rising above petty ills and petty actions, the bringing of a practical, reasonable religion, untrammeled by superstitions, to minds that were unable to accept any other sort of religion. The attempt to legislate against such an influence is as hopelessly ineffective as. and right in keeping with, the somber insanity which caused the witchburnings of the old Puritan days.
