Benson (Neb.) Enterprise

Most perplexing, that a "fad" should stand the test of forty years, gathering to itself with increasing rapidity trained thinkers, ministers, lawyers, doctors, hard-headed business men! Amazing, is it not, that these people fail to detect "the gigantic humbuggery" so easily discerned by our critic! These men, some of whom dwell in our midst. have found that instead of being a "foolish jumble of contradictions." Science and Health, by Mrs. Eddy, really is a "Key to the Scriptures;" that through the study of this book they are enabled to read the Bible understandingly, and as a consequence their lives are radically changed — they are better husbands, wiser fathers, worthier citizens. . . .

Did the Master mean all that he said, or did he not? Christian Science teaches that he did mean what he said, but Christian Scientists are beginners and do not claim the ability to demonstrate perfectly under all circumstances. They pray, as do other Christians, to be delivered from evil, and try to live in accord with that prayer. They do not needlessly expose themselves to danger, nor do they "drink carbolic acid" to convince unbelievers. Thus they follow the Master, who, when tempted, refused to convert stones into bread or to cast himself from the pinnacle of the temple.
