THE LITERARY STYLE OF SCIENCE AND HEALTH
The Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," occupies an important place in the world, and it is safe to say that its influence and popularity are growing each day. It is a book with a mission; a book with a world-wide work to perform, and its influence and popularity are due to its universal appeal. It is a theological treatise, as well as a hand-book of mental healing; it is a compendium of divine philosophy, as well as a practical guide for every-day life; it contains the best in religion, moral philosophy, and medicine, and the results following its study are sufficient justification of all that is claimed for it.
In arriving at a correct estimate of a book, one naturally examines the subject-matter, as well as the style of the author. Why was the book written? What did it hope to accomplish? Does it merely please the fancy and flatter the intellect, or has it a serious purpose? The subjectmatter of a book largely determines the style and although the outward form may be grace itself, the ideas thus beautifully cloaked may be pernicious to health and morals. If the books we read do not ennoble life by improving our ideals, they would better remain unread. If our learning does no more for us than it did for the scholarly Faust, it may well be considered profitless.
