Baltimore American

One point made by the Christian Scientists in their fight at Annapolis is thus stated by Judge Buskirk: "This bill does not require osteopaths to take a medical examination, nor opticians, nor purveyors of patent medicines. Why do those who heal by prayer require greater restrictions than these classes?" Naturally the doctors have tried to make more strict the rules guarding entrance into their circle. They have shown their good faith by raising the standards of education in their schools and by erecting a system of State board examinations. From their standpoint healing as a religion or as a business, or as both, is bad and dangerous.

But with many people the old idea of personal liberty still has its vogue. They want to have the right of doing as they prefer. If they wish a bottle of patent medicine, or if they desire their muscles rubbed down, or if they decide to make their ills matters of prayer, they object to having a Legislature say that they shall surrender their own wills and be healed only as the law directs. So, by the same logic, if they are willing to pay the druggist who sells the medicine, or the experts who rub their muscles, or the persons who pray for them, it is strictly their own business. Some day the world will know just what is right and best in the methods of health and healing, and in the mean while it is well for legislators to be slow and modest.
