[Written for the Sentinel.]

ASPIRATION

Holy Father, wise and gracious.
I would lift my thought to Thee.
Through Thy universe so spacious
Dwelleth Love's infinity.
I would feel Thy mercy tender,
Know Thy sense of perfect good,
Look on Thee as my defender,
Trust Thee as Thy children should.
So, when harm seems near my dwelling,
Perfect love shall cast out fear.
Law of Truth, all laws excelling,
Help divine is always near.
