There was a time when life and health seemed inexpressibly...
There was a time when life and health seemed inexpressibly beautiful, but for me they appeared to be unattainable. For four years and a half I was very ill, until the glorious tidings of Christian Science changed my sad existence to a bright and pleasant one. Toward the end of September, in 1905, I heard of Christian Science for the first time, and I at once sought a practitioner. I never can forget that day. My main trouble was an enlargement of the stomach, and the only hope which my physician saw for me was in an operation. He proposed the removal of the enlarged part, but I was too weak for that; besides, I was suffering from nervous weakness, heart trouble, etc. My healing through the truth was very slow, almost imperceptible, but sure. At first I worried because I did not improve more rapidly, but later on I recognized joyfully the blessing which this slow healing was to me, in view of my spiritual growth. Sleeplessness and heart trouble vanished first, and now my stomach is performing its duties in a normal way. The importance of this statement can only be appreciated by those who knew how ill I was. Sometimes I can hardly realize it myself.
I have been made physically well through Christian Science, but the spiritual blessing which I have received I realize more fully as time goes on. I am always glad when I hear of the healing of a poor sufferer who has found this way to health and peace, because I can see more and more that I could never have been made well, either physically or mentally, without Christian Science. I say with David: "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits." I am also deeply grateful to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy.
