When I first had help from Christian Science I was almost a wreck, physically and mentally. For seventeen years I had been an invalid, having almost all the ills that flesh is heir to. I tried any number of doctors and all kinds of medicines I could find, but received no help. For a long time the doctors said that nothing but a surgical operation would help me, and they were not sure that would do me any good. As neither my husband nor I was willing to have the operation performed, I dragged on. A few months before I came to Christian Science my spine began to cause me great suffering. The doctor we called said I would have to be put into a plaster cast, and then wear all sorts of accessory appliances in the way of braces, etc.; but having been through all this once before, I declined to do so again.

In the house where we were boarding at the time was a Christian Scientist. My husband had been a great sufferer from stomach trouble for a number of years, and one night at the table he said that he was discouraged, that he had tried everything he knew and that nothing seemed to relieve him. Our little girl, then about ten years old, said, "Papa, why do you not try Christian Science? I have been watching the people who come to see Mrs. — [the Christian Scientist practitioner in the house where we boarded],—people who are sick, and blind, and lame when they first come, and they go away well." That night he took his first Christian Science treatment, and continued it for two weeks, when he was healed. Then he wanted me to try Christian Science; which I did. and in two weeks was so much improved that I quit taking treatment and went to studying for myself. After about nine months we went into the work ourselves. I have seen a great many wonders wrought by the truth,—the healing of both sickness and sin,—and am learning more and more that Truth is all-powerful if we only hold fast to God and let nothing else into our consciousness. I am truly thankful to God, for all His goodness to us; and to our dear Leader for Christian Science, which helped us out of our trouble.
