As I had always enjoyed health, it required some time...
As I had always enjoyed health, it required some time to convince me that Christian Science was a practical religion and that it would be of any benefit to me; but after prejudice had been overcome sufficiently, I secured a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and began reading. Almost immediately I experienced a change in thought and ambition, and after about two weeks of study I was surprised to learn that it had been a week or more since I had indulged in either smoking or drinking, habits to which I had been in bondage for a number of years. This was seven years ago, and I have never had the slightest desire for tobacco or liquor since.
Three years ago this winter I had an opportunity to experience physical healing from the effects of an accident. One morning, after a light snow had covered the icy walk, making it very slippery, I started for the office, but had gone only a short distance when I fell. With some difficulty I managed to get up, and found that my back was injured. After hesitating a moment I started for the train, and on arriving at the office I shut myself up and began to read Science and Health. The pain seemed almost unbearable, but after a couple of hours it had quieted down so that I took up my work; but while I continued to go to the office regularly every day, and was comparatively free from pain, it was very evident that the healing was not complete. In about six weeks a serious condition had developed; and remembering that my father had passed on under the same experience, excepting that his injury was caused in a different way, I went immediately to a Christian Science practitioner and had treatment occasionally for about two months. By that time I had realized sufficient improvement to continue the work myself, and in about one year from the time of the accident the discharge had ceased and the wound was perfectly healed, and I have never been conscious of it since. This may be considered a slow healing, but as I continued to work and study, this gave me a clearer idea of the practical application of Christian Science than I would have gained otherwise; and considering that I never lost a single day from business, I am perfectly satisfied.
