In November, 1905, I was suddenly taken ill with a dreaded disease. About six months before this time I had been overcome with a similar attack. I was then under medical treatment for three weeks, and since then had lived in constant fear on account of the physician's opinion that such an attack is likely to repeat itself and in a more violent form. At the time of the second attack I spent one whole day in agony, before sending for a doctor, and when he finally came I was so exhausted that I could hardly speak. The physician at once administered a narcotic, which seemed to ease the pain temporarily. Thus three days passed; then the physician said that he must call in a specialist, who declared that an operation was necessary, though it must be postponed for a time on account of my weakened condition. For about five weeks I was in the care of both physicians; then all medicine was stopped and I was allowed a little food, as both physicians considered it absolutely necessary for me to have an operation as soon as I had gained the needed strength. My condition improved somewhat, and after about six weeks I was able to be out of bed for a little while at a time. The pain diminished but did not leave me.

Meanwhile my sister had informed a relative in Hannover of my illness and the impending operation. This relative had been completely healed of an ailment of many years' standing through Christian Science, and she thought the time had come in which to call my attention to its blessings. She urged me to come to Hannover and take treatment before consenting to an operation. This was toward the end of January, 1906. I rejoiced at the thought of being spared the dreaded ordeal, and I improved so rapidly that by the middle of March I could travel to Hannover. After the first explanation of Christian Science I felt myself awakening. The thought which had long been slumbering in me needed but a touch to arouse it. I grew in the understanding of Truth from day to day, and came to see the nothingness of the disease. I began to place my confidence in God, good, in whom "we live, and move, and have our being." The firm faith in the Almighty, who creates good only and is our only help, has kept me well.

Since my return to Berlin, in April, 1906, I have constantly improved. No operation was necessary. I am stronger than ever, and feel happy and contented. I thank God every day that He led me to Christian Science; and my happiest hours are those when I am engaged in the study of that truth through which I have found God, health, and peace.—Frau Marie Rueffer, Berlin, Germany.
