"THE COMFORTER"

The Master said to his disciples, "And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth." In the original Greek the word for "comforter" is parakletos, meaning either "comforter" or "advocate," and this word "advocate" throws a wonderful light upon the passage above quoted. The generally accepted theory is that man needs an advocate with God, and we find here that Jesus did promise an advocate to us, —one that should come to mankind to plead for God, to reveal to humanity the truth about God and man. In this passage from the first epistle of John. "If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous," the word parakletos is rendered as "advocate," and the elucidation of the word is given, "one called alongside (to help)."

Divine Science, which our Leader tells us plainly she understands to be the "Comforter" (Science and Health, p. 55), enables us each to find out how Christ Jesus demonstrated the truth about God and man; and we thus realize more and more that the way to the kingdom of heaven has indeed been made both possible and plain.
