THE SPIRITUAL ROCK

They drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.—I Corinthians, 10:4.

Throughout the Scriptures we find frequent reference to the "Rock," and it almost always stands for the spiritual idea. At the very close of his wonderful Sermon on the Mount. the great Teacher employs this figure to show the need of the one foundation on which to build out obedience to divine law; namely, the understanding of spiritual reality. The student of Christian Science who may meet with seemingly hard experiences, on his way out of the wilderness of material sense, should be strengthened by the assurance given by Christ Jesus, that the house built upon the true foundation will stand in spite of the rain, the wind, and the floods which may assail it.

For some time, Christian Scientists as a body have been undergoing an experience of the kind described in the great Sermon. Their Cause and its Leader have been assailed by a long-continued storm of mortal misrepresentation, the avowed purpose of which, as finally expressed, was the destruction of the whole superstructure of Christian Science. The point of attack was, however, the personality of the Leader of the movement, and the method seemed to be that to which Jesus referred when he quoted the old prophet's words, "Smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad." It is not known by those who do not understand or practise Christian Science that the faith of Christian Scientists does not rest upon the personality of their honored Leader, but upon the divine Principle revealed to them through her teachings. In the understanding of God as thus made known, she and they alike find shelter from the storm and tempest of human ignorance, fear, and malice, and emerge from each experience with a surer sense of Truth's all-power and wisdom. They have therefore stood more firmly than ever before by the truth which has healed them of sin and sickness, and have been, if it were possible, more loving and loyal than ever to the one through whom the healing-truth was brought to them at such cost on her part.
