I was healed by Christian Science in March, 1900

I was healed by Christian Science in March, 1900. I had never been strong, and when only a child I had frequent sick spells, but I was brought up to make the best of things, and not complain. When I broke down entirely in the fall of 1898, it was a great disappointment to me, one that I never got over until I learned of Christian Science. I had set my heart upon having a good education, then giving my whole time to the study of music, but the doctor thought I would never be able to study again. I was under our family physician's care for quite a while, but did not improve as my parents thought I should. I then went to a neighboring town and employed one of the best physicians, but with the same results, so that I became discouraged with doctors and medicine. In a few weeks I was very much worse than ever before, the old trouble being worse and other conditions setting in, so that medicine given for one seemed to go against another. My head was troubling me a great deal, and I was unconscious much of the time, but suffered more than I can tell. At the beginning of October, 1899, I was in bed and nearly all the time helpless. Another physician was called, but did not help me any more than the first one had done. They claimed that mine was one of the worst forms of nervous trouble of which they had ever known. They said there was organic disease also, and decided that I should go to a hospital for an operation at once. Then the second doctor we had employed was called again. He said I was not in a condition to go through an operation, and asked permission to give me a new remedy. This was done, but the treatment failed, and I was worse than ever, growing weaker every day. I was in such a condition that they said if I lived I would be either crazy or foolish, and they could not do anything to help me. Every one was expecting to hear of my death at any hour.

All hope was about given up when a friend came to my mother and asked her why she did not try Christian Science treatment. My parents asked the doctor what he thought about it, and he replied that they should try Christian Science by all means if they thought it would do me good, as doctors had done all they could for me. My parents had no faith in Christian Science, and I was too helpless to know much that was going on, but my father went to Rockland, eight miles from our home, and brought a Christian Science practitioner home with him. She returned to Rockland that night, and the next morning I was healed. I had one week's treatment, although I was healed at the first, and I never can tell of the rest, peace, and health that it brought me any more than I can tell of the suffering which I endured before that. The family physician then said that my healing would not be permanent, but it occurred on the first of March, 1900, and I gain in strength and health every year, while Christian Science meets all my needs in every way, and I am indeed grateful for it. The expense for medical treatment was very great, one hundred dollars being paid for the four weeks' trial of the last remedy. We paid five dollars for the treatment in Christian Science, and four dollars for a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy.

I wish that I could tell all that Christian Science has done for my parents and for me since I was first healed and there is much more I could tell about my own sickenss and healing. I must add that people speak of my looking well, and I am well, the old troubles are all gone. I studied music all last summer without any ill effects, and worked very hard at millinery during the fall and spring season. I can walk easily, and stand all that I need to, which I enjoy, as it was always hard for me before. I am going to continue the music lessons, and am very grateful that I can study again. I cannot find words that will express my gratitude for Christian Science, but I shall try harder each day to express it in my daily life, for I appreciate more and more each day of my life the work that Mrs. Eddy has done for us all.—Gertrude E. Newcomb, Warren, Me.
