In 1888 I had my first attack of severe rheumatic trouble, and was confined to my bed for six months. Two doctors attended me then, and when I got out on crutches I tried all kinds of so-called cures, among them daily treatment by electricity for three months. In about six months I was able to get along without crutches, and for ten years I had no serious attack to speak of, although I was often reminded that the disease was in my system. I think it was in 1898 or in 1899 that I was sent to a hospital, and spent six months of terrible suffering there. I was attended by several prominent physicians, besides the house physicians, and again I got out on crutches and used them for a year. My next serious attack was in 1902, and then I was relieved in five weeks. During these years I visited all the springs I could get to, such as Hot Springs, Ark., and several others. Besides this I spent a great deal for medicines, but nothing gave me a permanent cure. I tried Christian Science in March, 1904, and in May I was entirely free from the trouble. Not one trace of it appears, and I was not able to make such a statement truthfully from 1888 to May, 1904.
A great many Chicago people remember my condition, and many of my friends ridiculed the idea when I took up Christian Science; but all acknowledged that I was a good subject to work on, and I certainly was. The expenditure of a small sum for Christian Science treatment and literature has given me light on what I consider the most wonderful discovery of this age. I am now able to attend to any little complaint which may appear, without resorting to medicine, and am really enjoying perfect health instead of suffering torture. I pray to God that the good work may go on and reach many another sufferer who needs the help of Christian Science.—R. H. Baum, Baltimore, Md.
