A little more than a year ago, owing to a most severe mental struggle respecting business matters, I was actually obliged to come to Christian Science for help, from the fact that I had tried to find it elsewhere with no success, and under existing circumstances help at that time was absolutely necessary. During this trouble Christian Science had many times been mentioned as a panacea, but the very thought of help from such a source was inwardly scorned, until as a last resort I said I would try it and see what it could do. Having all my life been an earnest worker in my own church, and a member of it, I had always thought of Christian Science as a work not of God. As I approached it for the mental help alone, I secretly decided that I should be very cautious and not allow anybody to influence me into this seemingly strange religion; hence the spirit with which I came to Christian Science for help. Nearly all my life, and especially during the last year, I had many times wondered why I could not live sincerely, uprightly, and honestly; why there should, of seeming necessity, be so much sin, sickness, and sorrow, with no apparent relief; why we did not have in our midst the same blessed healing truth that Jesus taught when he was on earth. Had any one told me that Christian Science could answer each and every one of these questions, that there and there alone might be solved the problem of all this apparent discord, I should have again scorned the answer. But at last God alone led me to this blessed truth, and it is with the earnest desire that this testimony may help some dear one who is struggling with material beliefs, as I was, that I write these few sincere words of gratitude.

The many blessings my family and myself have received since coming into this great truth, words can never express, only the heart can feel! I can only say to those who are in need of help, either physical or mental, not to halt any longer between ignorant opinion and prejudice, but step out and forward; seek and learn, each one for himself, what this great truth is as it is taught today in Christian Science. God is leading and guiding each one who desires the truth, and He alone can heal and satisfy. Why are we so unwilling to turn from human opinions and place our trust wholly in God? It is because in our past teaching we have never been given the rule by which we might follow the first and greatest of all God's commands, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." How many times during the past have these words sounded in our ears! The first and greatest commandment is this, "Thou shalt love [and trust] the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself." How can we possibly obey the second without first learning to live the first part of this commandment?

This great truth was first brought to us by the dear Christ Jesus, whom our Leader describes as "the most scientific man that ever trod the globe" (Science and Health, p. 313). To-day it is again in our midst, clearly given and explained in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. We cannot read this book without thinking of the life that Jesus lived in order that this healing truth might be given to all mankind. We all love and honor our Leader, and with one accord we lift up our hearts in loving gratitude for the great work she is doing in our midst. We are enabled, through her teachings, to know that she is being constantly protected and guarded by the one God and Father of us all.
