I was of a weak constitution, and ailing ever since I can remember. Lung trouble was in our family, my mother dying with it when I was four years old. As I grew older several diseases fastened upon me, and after my marriage, ten years ago, I failed rapidly. I was under the care of doctors constantly, and we lived very plainly, as all of my husband's means were needed for medical treatment. We lived in Oklahoma, but I got so low there that the doctor said nothing would do me any good unless it was a change of climate; so we came to Dakota. We came overland, as the doctor said the fresh air and camping out would be good for me, but I was miserable all the way and had to stop at several towns to consult a doctor. After reaching Sturgis, S. D., where we settled, this climate had no effect on me whatever, indeed I seemed to grow weaker and my ailments were aggravated. The doctor at Sturgis said he could not do anything for me, that I had a disease which could never be cured but by an operation, and that that heart action was very weak and the nervous system wrecked. We then moved to Sioux Falls and I took several months treatment of a specialist on lung diseases, but kept growing worse. The specialist then told my husband that I had come to him too late, that I was beyond all medical aid; that I might live two or three months, but he did not think I could stand it thirty days longer.
It was then that one of the neighbors called my attention to Christian Science and gave me some literature to read. As soon as I began reading, it gave me hope; in a few days I bought a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and began its study. It strengthened and helped me and has been my salvation. I attended the Christian Science services, and got acquainted with the First Reader. On one occasion I had a bad attack, and my husband telephoned her. She came and gave me treatment, and I was able to get out of bed soon after she left. Thereafter I persistently studied Science and Health, putting its teaching into practice, and I grew in strength daily. I have now been in Science a little over seven years and we have not spent one penny for medicine in that time. Before coming into Christian Science I was not able to do my work and often detained my husband from his. Now, my health is good and every one remarks how well I look.
This account of my healing may be poorly written, but these are facts, and I can give more if disred. We came to De Queen, Ark., eighteen months ago, settling in one of the so-called malarial districts. The people here predicted that I would certainly suffer from the prevalent conditions, but they have never touched me, and I have been the means of healing numbers of others through this truth, and proving to them that in truth no locality is unhealthy.
