The healing which results from Christian Science is...
Corona (Cal.) Courier
The healing which results from Christian Science is entirely different in Principle and effect from that of faith cure, mental science, hypnotism, and other methods which the uninformed think are akin to Christian Science. Hypnotism and mental science affect the individual through the operation of the human mind, while Christian Science excludes this mind in its practice and relies wholly upon its understanding of the divine Mind to destroy evil and sin. Again, these systems of the human mind in making their cures—which are always temporary—do not improve the patient spiritually. The Scriptures teach most emphatically that sin is the cause of all moral discord, the term sin including, of course, all unintentional wrong thinking and acting, as well as wilful disobedience. Hence there can be no true healing without the destruction of sin, and this is the real mission of Christian Science. It is very evident that the orthodox churches have not so taught, as witness their reliance on materia medica, hygiene, and other inventions of the human mind, not one of which was employed by Jesus or his followers. That Jesus knew sin to be the cause of disease is shown by his remarks to the impotent man at the pool of Bethesda: "Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee." To the man "sick of the palsy" he said, "Thy sins be forgiven thee. ... Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house." While Christian Science differs from the orthodox teaching and practice, it does not differ from that of Jesus Christ; and its students, according to their degree of understanding, are healing the sick and reforming the sinner in compliance with his commands.
