During the month of July, 1893, I was visiting a friend...
During the month of July, 1893, I was visiting a friend in Pueblo, Col., when I became quite ill. She summoned a physician, who said I had a serious throat trouble. My friend, being much alarmed, sent for her family physician, to see if the first diagnosis was correct. He said was; so I was quarantined in one room and every precaution taken to protect the family. I had been confined to my room for fourteen days, when the fear of death came upon me. A message was sent to my mother, who notified the rest of my family of her fears. At last I asked my friend if she would call a student of Mrs. Eddy to visit me. This student kept a green-house, and when she came she brought me a large bunch of pink roses. As she entered the room she said. "Dear, did you know that God is Life?" Such a sense of warmth came to me, and I was filled with love for all mankind. She remained a few minutes, and left me a new woman. In an hour I sat up, and the next day was dressed, although she had given me but one treatment. The second day my mother took me to our home in Canon City, Col., a distance of about forty miles. I did not realize at the time how it was done, but the words, "God is Life," remained in my consciousness.
There were days when I was full of fear, and again I had more courage. I did not read or study Christian Science, as I had no literature, though I knew there was a book called "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. For two years I read other kinds of literature, called "mental and divine science," till the year 1895, when I met some loyal students of Christian Science in Denver, Col. Their love and patience endeared them to me. It was the truth which they lived, as taught in Christian Science, that led me to become a loyal student of Christian Science after I had again strayed into the by-paths. In 1898 I sent to Boston for as many of Mrs. Eddy's books as I could then afford, and shortly after subscribed for the periodicals. I did not know it at the time, but I found that Christian Science had cured me of chronic bronchial trouble, and also of a bowel trouble which had caused much pain, and to-day I am perfectly well. I have been a member of The Mother Church since 1902. So much love has been shown us by the students of Christian Science in Montana, Utah, and Colorado, that I cannot express enough gratitude to God, and to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, save to follow faithfully the Christian example set me, that others may be led to see the truth to which I was so lovingly led.—Mrs. Mary C. M. Beach, Denver, Col.
