[Written for the Sentinel.]

THE MORNING LIGHT

Methought I saw a hill and heavy cross,
And error crying, "Crucify!"
Then on that cross the "perfect man" was nailed,
While all the earth was black and heaven wailed.
'Twas done! And chaos reigned;
And in the tomb of him who deigned
To die for men, was buried their last hope.
Behold! Love rose from out the gloom,
And lo, the stone of sin was rolled away!
While he whom hate had crucified came forth:
And like the spray that tips the heavy wave,
Doubt lashed the shores of doubt and vanished,
while about
The heavens there rang a glad hosanna out!
Gone was the fearful pall of night,
And on earth's vision broke
The radiant truth—the morning light.
