Evening Recorder,
An article in your paper of Feb. 26 charges Christian Science with being responsible for the disruption of many homes. No evidence is offered in support of this charge. Neither is the charge sustained by those who are in the best position to know the facts. More than this, an acquaintance with the teachings of Christian Science shows how impossible it would be for this religion, when really understood and properly applied in the relations of everyday life, to bring discord or separation in the home....
Christian Science teaches that the home relations are sacred, and that they must be maintained against the attacks of evil. Christian Science enlarges the affections; it does not contract them. It has been truly said that when we have more to love, we love more, and Christian Science inculcates a genuine love for all that is good and pure. Under its ministrations husbands and wives who have been estranged for one reason or another, have been brought together again, and homes that have been disrupted by vice, selfishness, or worldliness have been rendered harmonious.
Jesus said, "I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household." He expected that some members of a household might accept his teachings, while others would not, and that this would cause a difference of opinion. Such experiences have necessarily occurred all though the ages. Some are ready for the truth; other are not, but there need be no discord on account of a disagreement of opinions. Men have differed over religious topics from time immemorial, and it would not be difficult to find cases of divorce or separation because of a difference arising from a belief in other creeds, but it would be unfair to say that that particular church was causing divorce. Those who understand Christian Science know better than to believe that it is other than a force for good in society.
