I was appointed sanitary officer in June, 1901, and the next fall, when our city had quite an epidemic of a so-called contagious disease, I was asked if I would enter a house supposed to be infected, my superiors knowing that I was a Christian Scientist. I readily said that I would, and at once set to work, disinfecting the house and taking the patients to the pest-house, being exposed perhaps more than any other person in the city. By constant demonstration of the truth I overcame the belief of contagion; but a change occurred in the city administration, and the new board did not altogether approve of my method, recommending that I resort to material means to prevent the spread of the disease. To satisfy them I sterilized my clothing, etc., and on the ninth day following the disinfection of the next house I was taken down with a very malignant type of the disease. (This was in March, 1902.) I called in a Christian Science practitioner, through whose understanding of Truth I was enabled to resume my duties on the following Monday, being absent from my work only four days.
