[Written for the Sentinel.]

"BE STILL, AND KNOW"

The day no more seems gay and glad,
Instead, the time is sorry, sad,
And full of woe.
Upon the dark and dismal day
'Tis time for you to watch and pray,—
"Be still, and know."

If striving seem well nigh in vain.
And pleasure e'er gives way to pain,—
Reliance show.
Talk not of fortune nor of fate.
Be brave and strong, in patience wait,—
"Be still, and know."

Although by fearful odds beset,
Hold ever faster, firmer yet;
Fear not the foe.
For Love will meet your ev'ry need,
Within the Holy Book we read—
"Be still, and know."
