It is with gratitude to God that I can give my first experience in Christian Science, a healing effected by reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and two weeks' treatment, after having spent ten years under the treatment of the best medical talent to be had, both here and on the Pacific coast, where I went on the advice of my physicians. While there I became unable to eat anything, and I also underwent a surgical operation for another trouble, spending weeks in a hospital, and emerging therefrom greatly weakened. For two years I took powerful medicine, as the physicians and surgeons had assured me that another operation, more severe than the first, would be necessary as soon as I was strong enough to endure it. I was, however, finally sent home with the caution not to allow the operation. After my return I was in a very deplorable condition, both mentally and physically, as it was beginning to dawn on me that the physicians were unable to cure me and were only shifting me around from one locality to another. During this time I would read my Bible, with the expectation of finding relief and comfort; but not being able to understand it, would lay it down, feeling more discouraged than before. I often wished there were healings now, as in Jesus' time.
At this time the subject of Christian Science was broached to me. While I felt that it might do for some, personally I was in despair, little knowing that this help I was rejecting was the Christ-healing for which I had been longing. I was told of a case of healing effected by it, and a little later a request for treatment was sent to a practitioner. She happened to be away from home at the time, and it was not known how soon she would return, but on the fourth day I arose, dressed, and went downstairs unaided, with perfect ease and freedom of thought—something I had not done or experienced for years. Six days later I went to the practitioner's home, and there learned that the freedom of thought had come with the first treatment. I went to her home on the street car, but walked back, a distance of one and a half miles, with a happy heart and a light step, and with a gratitude to God which expressed itself all the way.
I have since had many beautiful demonstrations which proved the omnipotence of God, and am very grateful for the light, and for the understanding which has been given me of man's relation to God. I am deeply grateful to Mrs. Eddy for this understanding, as well as for my healing.
