I entered the army in 1864, when I was nineteen years...
I entered the army in 1864, when I was nineteen years old. While in the South, and after about five months' service, I contracted severe bowel trouble, and after my return home I still had it. I tried all kinds of remedies, but they did not help, neither did doctors and their medicines. In 1867 I consulted an old army doctor, and told him if he would cure me I would give him my last hundred dollars. After a three-months trial he said there was no medicine on earth that could cure me. I was then told that I might be cured by strong stimulants, so I started with whisky and brandy, and took large quantities, but I was not cured. In 1873 I came to Beatrice, Neb., and lived there for about ten years, and though I could do some light work I was never without pains, which were sometimes very severe. After a time I took a severe cold, and had two ailments, so I went to Florida for the climate, but the bowel trouble became worse. In 1887 I came back to Beatrice to look after my interests there, and the doctor told me that I should fix up my affairs, for I could not live. He also said there was no medicine which could do me any good.
That same day I saw an old friend, who asked me to meet a Christian Scientist. I at first refused, but he urged me, and I went. The practitioner talked to me, and showed me how infinite Mind controls the body. I asked him for treatment and bought a copy of Science and Health. I was treated and felt better, so that I was able to go to Wisconsin. I took three weeks' absent treatment, read as much as I could in the Bible and Science and Health, and in two months I returned, having gained in weight and feeling quite strong, though not entirely rid of the old disease. I took treatment from another practitioner, and was helped. I was studying Science and Health all the time I could, and gaining right along; then I thought that if some one else could get the truth out of that book, I could do it as well, so I continued to study it, and also read what Jesus said about healing, and in that way I, too, was healed. In 1888 I went through a class with Mrs. Eddy, and after that I was better able to help myself and others. The old disease does not trouble me any more, and whenever symptoms of any ailment make their appearance I am able, by knowing the truth, to cast them out of my consciousness. Now I weigh two hundred pounds, am in perfect health, and have been able to keep myself so for eighteen years. Even in the beginning I said that I would not take three times its price for Science and Health if I could not get another copy, and after I understood better what I was reading, I said I would not take three thousand dollars. At this time I would not take the whole world for my book, if I could not get another copy, for what is a man profited if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?
This book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and the Bible, are worth all there is in the world to me, and I would not be without them.
