For two years prior to 1897 I had suffered great distress...
For two years prior to 1897 I had suffered great distress and pain from frequent attacks of rectal trouble, and was so depressed by it that I decided to accept the oft-repeated advice of our family physician, who had most faithfully prescribed every known remedy for the trouble, and had told me that the only permanent cure must come by a surgical operation. A few days before I was to go to the hospital, a dear friend, who was then having Christian Science treatment for her eyes, hearing that I was intending to have the surgeon's aid, told me how she was being helped by Christian Science, and begged me to try it. She was so earnest in her wish for me to give Christian Science a trial, that with the hope of being spared from the knife I decided to see a practitioner. The next day I went to call on the lady who was helping my friend.
As there were several others in her office, I waited for over an hour, and when I was shown in I told her I wanted to come to her just as I would go to a real doctor. She very kindly but firmly asked me not to think of her as a doctor, and when I said that I did not want to read Mrs. Eddy's book, she asked me if I would read just two paragraphs in Science and Health. She said this would enable her to do the work for me more effectually. With reluctance I consented to do so, and she gave me the book to study for a week. At the end of that time I went to see her again, very much in the dark and with but little improvement, as it seemed. (I make this statement to show what my mental attitude was at this time.) She told me I could be healed, and I followed her advice for two weeks longer, with the result of a clearer thought about the power of God and His willingness to help the suffering. Before a month had gone by I was so much better that I knew I need not go to my old doctor again. Physically I was healed, and spiritually I was awakening to a new light. One by one other troubles have been healed, all by the power of the truth that makes us free. I have not used drugs of any kind, nor have I needed medical treatment.
To be perfectly free from physical ills is to me a very great relief, but the greater blessings that come in the spiritual strength, gained by honest, faithful study of Christian Science, is far above what I sought for when I first went for help. My gratitude to God, for having given to the world these blessings through our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, is unbounded; and I am truly happy to send this testimony of my healing, with the hope of helping others in like need.—Mrs. Mary E. Gilmer, Cambridge, Mass.
