A TRIBUTE TO MRS. EDDY

The Boston Post

A tribute to the Rev. Mary Baker Eddy was paid by Captain William A. Morse, formerly commander of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Boston, counsel for the Christian Science Church and one of its followers, in an address before two hundred and fifty members of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company gathered together at the Quincy House yesterday to observe the birthday of Washington. The reference to the Rev. Mrs. Eddy created considerable surprise in the company and stirred a dozen members to vigorous applause.

Captain Morse in his address referred to the past as the age of young men, citing as examples Alexander at the age of thirty-two sighing for new worlds to conquer, and Napoleon at twenty-seven the conqueror of Italy. The present age, he said, was the age of the grown man, and he cited as examples Gladstone at the age of eighty guiding the world-empire of Great Britain and the Rev. Mary Baker Eddy at the age of eighty-six directing and counseling in the work of Christian Science.

"No matter what you may think of her doctrine," said he, referring to Mrs. Eddy, "it is certainly a significant fact that this woman at the age of eighty-six is directing and counseling the work of the Christian Science Church, which has thousands of followers all over Europe and Asia and has many thousand adherents in New England alone."
