[Written for the Sentinel.]

TEACH ME

TEACH me to watch when mortal night is deepest,
Assured there comes a passing of the night,
When I may open wide my Father's window
And point the rousing dreamer to the light.

Teach me to help my brother as he wakens,
To tell him where the bread and wine are found.
That he may rise with gladness in the morning
And leave the chains wherewith he has been bound.

Keep me, dear Father, ever humbly waiting
Thy loving work of always doing good;
Help me to give out gladly to the hungry
Thy everlasting store of heavenly food.

And wine which brings high hope and strength and gladness,
To heal the weary heart of all its pain;
Help me to pour out freely from my pitcher
And fill it at the well of Life again.
