SIGNS OF THE TIMES

NEVER have I felt Truth so near, so real, and so soulimpelling as since the storm of error has brought into glowing radiance the power of divine Love to bring to human consciousness the ever-presence of Spirit, God, as revealed in the teachings and life of our Leader, Mrs. Eddy. God, not man, makes history; and the attempt of a magazine to do so brought to me with startling clearness the divine energy of one living germ of spiritual truth,—forcing its way through all material environments and limitations, though driven hither and thither in search of peace and rest and finding none; with soul-filled longings never satisfied in any material person, place, or thing. What mental and physical suffering this all meant is not to be conceived, for these restless longings were not to be appeased until the turning and overturning brought out an awakening to the supremacy of Truth—the allness of Mind, God, and the nothingness of matter, mortal mind.

Jesus declared, "When he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth [Spirit]." Material history would find Mrs. Eddy in materiality but the truth knows no affiliation there. In Science and Health (p. 152), speaking as the author, Mrs. Eddy says, " Every material dependence had failed her, in her search for truth; and she can now understand why, and can see the means by which mortals are divinely driven to a spiritual source for health and happiness." Surely. the darker the experience the greater the light that has guided her into the position where to-day, the wide world round, there are hearts joined to hearts, breathing love and gratitude not simply to Mrs. Eddy, but to the truth she has brought to the world, turning darkness into light, sorrow into joy, and causing sin and death to lose their terrors through a higher understanding of God, whom to know aright is eternal life—now. This truth is known by its deeds, and no greater evidence do we need than that supplied us in the fact that Mrs. Eddy has been able to withstand and overcome every attempt to hinder or destroy her work. She lives the truth she teaches, and standing ever at her post, without the weapons of the world, she has held aloft the banner of Christian Science against every effort to pull it down. All who honestly and consistently follow her teachings and example may prove the truth for themselves and see how it is that loyal-hearted Christian Scientists love and honor their Leader above all others.
